How To Adjust To Progressive Lenses For First Time Wearers

Wearing progressive lenses for the first time can be exhausting, as your eyes have to adjust to the lenses. This can potentially cause some uncomfortable side effects. However, once your eyes are adjusted, you’ll be happy you stuck out the tiring short-term effect of adjusting. Progressive lenses are very popular and thanks to technological advances, they can give your vision a whole new life cycle. In this article we’ll explain what progressive lenses are and how to get used to progressive lenses.

What Are Progressive Lenses?

If you’re over 40 years old and you feel like your eyesight is going blurry, chances are you might need progressive eyeglasses. Progressive lenses - AKA no line bifocals - are a type of multifocal lens. Multifocal glasses have different prescriptions built into one lens, so you can see every distance clearly: far, intermediate and near (bifocals, on the other hand, only have two prescriptions: for far- and near-sightedness). Progressive glasses have no lines in between their different prescriptions, which means you can flick between different distances of vision with smooth transitions.

How Do Progressive Lenses Work?

Progressive glasses are meant for everyday use; after all, their entire purpose is ensuring that you can see well over a range of distances. If you have them, you should wear them all day long, almost accepting them as your new set of eyes. You can use your progressive lenses as reading glasses - the part on the bottom of your lenses is designed to look at objects close-up. Looking over long distances is also not a problem; other areas of the lenses are built specifically for this reason. This is why progressive lenses are so easy to use! You can switch out your old pair of reading glasses and single-vision glasses for one all-encompassing pair.

First Time Wearing Progressive Glasses?

Upon wearing progressive lenses for the first time, you might be asking yourself ‘why are my progressive lenses blurry?’ Don’t worry. It’s perfectly normal that your vision is blurry when you’re wearing progressive eyeglasses for the first time. Some side effects you may encounter in the beginning are nausea and blurry vision. Take it from us though - we can assure you it’s very easy getting used to progressive lenses, and these effects go away pretty quickly.

Here are some top tips to get used to your glasses from progressive lens wearers:

  • - Move your head. One of the first and most important steps to getting used to your new lenses is moving your head more. You should use your lenses by moving your head towards an object you want to focus on instead of simply moving your eyes.

  • - Remember that all your prescriptions are built into the lenses. Looking down is meant to look at objects close-up, looking up is for looking further away and looking straight ahead through the middle of your lenses puts the focus on intermediate distance.

  • - Don’t switch between glasses. Aim to only use your new pair of progressive glasses, this will help you get used to them much more quickly.

  • - The more you wear your glasses, the faster you will get used to them.

zFORT® Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Blue light is a potentially harmful form of light. While it is naturally emitted by the sun, electronic devices (upon which we’re spending more and more time every day) are also high-level producers. Blue light rays at a wavelength between 415nm - 455nm can damage your retinal cells, which may lead to premature eye ageing and vision problems in the future.

Our exposure to these harmful light rays may also cause a range of other health problems, including poor sleep (according to a 2012 Harvard Medical School study). Find out more about how to protect your eyes from blue light with anti blue light glasses from zFORT®.
