Contact Lenses: A Bit of History

Like eyeglasses, contact lenses help wearers to correct refractive errors. This effect is possible because the lens adds or subtracts focusing power to the eye's cornea and lens.

Contact lenses provide a safe and effective way to correct vision when used with care. However, to get to the quality and comfort that users might enjoy nowadays, there has had to be a great deal of progress and innovation.

The story of contact lenses starts in the 1500s, when Leonardo da Vinci noticed that his vision would change when he submerged his head in water. With this in mind, he considered the effects of wearing a water-filled glass semi sphere over the eye. For obvious reasons this invention did not succeed or became a dominant design; the semi sphere was heavy and impractical to carry and wear.

Over a century later, Da vinci’s invention and documents on alteration of vision with water was picked up by Descartes. Descartes proposed a device that gave meaning to the term ‘contact’: a glass tube filled with liquid placed in contact with the eye cornea. Although the device (sort of) worked, it was still impractical since it severely hindered the user’s ability to blink, and was still very heavy and painful to the eye.

More than two centuries after the previously mentioned event, Sir John Herschel, an English physicist, took Descartes’ contact lens idea to the next level - proposing a smaller object that would be moulded to the cornea. Due to the limitations of technology at the time, it was impossible to test Herschel’s hypothesis.

Decades passed until technology was advanced enough to test his hypothesis. It was in 1888 when Dr. Adolf Fick was able to make a lens out of blown glass. This device allowed users to blink but had several other problems due to its weight and size, which tired and suffocated the eye due to the lack of contact with air and oxygen.

In 1930, new plastics were developed which enabled production of lightweight transparent contact lenses that replicated the actual shape of the eye. This new product had new characteristics like increased flexibility and elasticity, and was also easier (and cheaper) to manufacture. Nonetheless, they still had a major problem; they were too big and, by covering the complete eye, users could not wear them for extended periods. This meant that the suffocating problem was still there.

A couple of decades worth of tests later and several advances in manufacturing and materials development led contact lenses to a drastic size reduction, making them much more comfortable to wear and also to remove. From then until now, contact lenses have constantly been developed, leading to the cutting edge tech leading the line in the contact lens market today.

Contact Lenses Today: Brands, Models and More

Modern contact lens technology is making breakthroughs all the time. A couple of years ago an important breakthrough was the possibility of wearing contact lenses as fashion accessories. Contact lenses became fashionable when they  not only were useful to correct vision difficulties or conditions, but they also came in different colours.

Coloured contact lenses come in a vast range of options. They can be blue, green, grey or, for the more adventurous among us, red or yellow. These options are ideal for those who want to boost their everyday look or are looking for Halloween contact lenses. Coloured contact lenses can be fashionable yet corrective as mentioned before, or they can also be “plano lenses” this means that they don't have any prescription; making the last ones not medical but a purely fashion device.

Although contact lenses can nowadays be used as fashion accessories, let's not forget their initial purpose: correcting eye conditions like myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism or presbyopia. There’s a pair of prescription contact lenses for everyone on our page. You can choose from a range of brands and types, as we stock heaps of cheap contact lenses. From daily disposable lenses, astigmatism contact lenses or multifocal lenses to contact lenses for near-sightedness and presbyopia - we’ve got you covered.

for this matter remember that out in the market there are several different types of contact lenses made out of different materials and with different treatments in order to offer the customers exactly what they request. Some of the types of contact lenses that are most commonly searched by people are: silicone hydrogel lenses, toric lenses, spherical or aspherical lenses, multifocal lenses or extended wear lenses. Before choosing a type and graduation of contact lens power remember it is important to visit your eye doctor and follow his recommendations.
