Winter is one of the best seasons for sunglasses. Although summer gets all the warm-weather accessories and of course the opportunity to show off your body, winter is actually better for fashion. Scarves, thicker sunglasses, boots, fancy socks, sexy gloves, in winter everything is a bit more fashionable, and sometimes more colorful too. You can get away with wearing Prada sunglasses in winter, but wearing the same frames in summer makes you look contrived and too “big city.”

And in fact Prada is one of the best brands for winter because of its bulk and girth. Other great winter brands are Tom Fords, which are likewise big but they have more of an autumn feel, and Police (for men) where you’ll be able to get a bit of bulk without compromising your natural, rugged looks. For men, there are very few winter brands that work without making you look like you are trying too hard, which in fact you would be in most cases (like people who wear their sunglasses indoors).

One of the best ways to look fashionable in winter is to pair scarves with sunglasses and possibly even a hat. The more chances to splash some color and charm into your wardrobe, the better. And you can get away with more. Sexy scarves with cool images on them, or knee-high boots that you’d be too shy to wear in summer, can all come out in winter in full force. And winter is the best season for fashion because your makeup can be thicker, more colorful and more personalized whereas in spring and summer you have to look light and natural.

If you find you are sensitive to metals you might want to steer clear of metal jewelry and other accessories, like metal buttons on jeans or even glasses. The sensitive area behind your ears can be especially susceptible to allergens, so you’ll want to make sure you don’t put these items right on top of your most coveted sensitive spots. If you find you are extremely allergic, plastic or rubber sunglasses or eyeglasses will be the only way out of discomfort for you. Bolle are great plastic sunglasses, or even a classic Adidas model. They do make wooden sunglasses but these are expensive and tend to break easily. We’d recommend plastic over wood, as wood can warp, break or even chip away, and unless you are an extremely careful being it’s just too dangerous/risky.

Metal allergies are annoying. You can’t wear necklaces, earrings, and belts with metal buckles or even glasses that look sleek and cool. The allergy sucks, but fortunately it’s a world of plastic and rubber these days, and even if you want to go green you’ll find everything that was formerly only available in metal in plastics, woods, bamboo and all kinds of other items. You can even get fabric or silk accessories to compliment your wardrobe and keep you looking sleek and cool despite your allergy.

Nickel is the most common allergy with metals, but you’ll also find that some plastics (especially the cheaper ones) can be bothersome to people with sensitive skin

For the workplace, there are some glasses that look appropriate, like the ever-popular Ralph Lauren office line of glasses, and some that are inappropriate but still cool, like Nike’s glasses line. Both are really cool, but for some professional settings only the former will really work.

First, it depends on the kind of office you have. If everyone wears a suit and tie to work, and women are in heels, then you’ll want to buy professional looking glasses for the workplace. If your office is more relaxed and people are free to express themselves through fashion then you may find a flashy pair of Alexander McQueen glasses are exactly what would be appropriate for the office. Gauge the mood before you spend the cash, as we’d hate for you to be reprimanded because of your wardrobe.

Second, depending on how much money you make you should be looking at the highest possible designer brands for your budget. Don’t skimp on your glasses, they are the first thing people see on you, and any time someone looks at you they will see your glasses. It shows that you respect yourself when you spend money on an important and necessary accessory like that. People love confidence in others, and it take confidence to wear designer glasses. Still, if you wear cheap Wal*Mart glasses people will notice that as well and will have the opposite opinion of you.

Third, stepping slightly outside your comfort zone with glasses is a good idea. You want to come across slightly more edgy then you are, slightly more adventurous. Then, every time you look in the mirror or others look at you they will see the person you are becoming as well as the person that you are.

In warfare, the number one most frequent injuries are to the eyes. They are such a fragile part of the human body, and our eyelids are hardly equipped to protect the fragile eye. Children are constantly hurting themselves, but hardly ever hurt their eyes because we are born with reflexes that help us protect ourselves. But, aside from the obvious eye problems like having something sharp injected into your eye, there are problems that can cause less invasive long-term results.

The sun can do a great amount of damage, and even cause blindness. Sunglasses are a great idea whenever the sun is out, and high-end brands like Bolle are great for this as you can be assured they have the right UV protection and high quality lenses that won’t shatter should they be dealt a direct blow. Never skimp on eyewear, as your eyes are the most important part of your body and need protection and care.

Eye-strain is another common eye problem caused from either trying to see something without proper light (like reading in the dark) or from too much light, like looking at a computer screen all day long. Eye strain can cause migraines and headaches, as well as general lethargy.

Itchy eye are another major complaint and this can be caused by allergies, in which pollen or other allergens make contact with the eye and cause discomfort and a small, local allergic reaction when your body rejects the pollutant. In people without allergies, itchy eyes can be caused from lack of moisture reaching the eye. Simple eye drops will go a long way to alleviating this discomfort.

With all the news recently on radiation from Japan and leaking reactors in other nations, people are starting to take notice of the dangers of modernity. Still, even if there were no reactors your eyes would need awesome Nike sunnies to keep them safe because radiation emanates from the planet, and bounces around in the atmosphere on cloudy (and polluted) days from the sun—so radiation is everywhere. The human body absorbs so much each year that it’s the equivalent of taking several X rays a year. The leakages around Fukishima, away from direct contact obviously, were not much stronger than the amount you normally absorb anyway. For many scientists who have been lamenting the rise of radiation on the planet for years, the Fukishima crisis must have been quite an annoying spike in citizen’s interest in their health. Still, there are things you can do to protect yourself from the radiation that is all around us, all the time.

Sunglasses are a great way to start. Radiation damages and weakens your eyes in a very serious way but with UV protection from high-end designer sunglasses designed for outdoor use like Bolle and Serengeti, you’re sure to get the protection you need. Without sunglasses, your eyes will be strained (causing wrinkles) and damaged (light in excess and radiation break down the fibers in the eye).

Sunscreen is another great idea. With all the radiation floating around its better to keep your skin protected with either long sleves (and that isn’t 100%) or sun block. SPF 30 or better is best. Sure, a tan looks nice but cancer looks horrible, so keep the pale skin and keep healthy!

Some people just have to be different. Different from their own person, even. Cosmetic contact lenses, like those by Expressions, are one way to change up your look. You don’t have to have the cat eye, red eye or futuristic eye (like the man in the image here) but subtle changes like added more blue to your already stunning blue eyes, can be fun.

If you have soft, brown eyes you can liven them up by making them darker or lighter, adding yellow or even a gold tint to them. Blue eyes are easy to enhance with purple or darker blue, and green eyes can be made darker or tinted to look blue. This is all very easy stuff with simple contact lenses, and they can even be prescription lenses colored to suit your needs.

For Halloween, cosmetic contacts are the exact thing you need to complete your look. Clowns with all white eyes are even more creepy than you can explain. Yellow cat eyes for the kitten look. Digital designed contacts for anyone dressed up as a mother board. Any ghost can have white eyes, which look creepily dead. Blood red eyes complete any zombie look. Halloween is one of the coolest holidays of the year and the perfect time to buy cosmetic contacts.

It’s a bit dangerous to keep cosmetic contacts in your eyes for longer than a day. Follow the instructions closely on all contact lenses to make sure you aren’t damaging your eyes just making them look slightly more dramatic.

Broad temple bars, like those found on most Prada and MiuMiu sunglasses, protect against peripheral light and ‘stray light,’ basically any light that might enter from the sides. Since your eyes are curved, they actually stick out slightly past your face for more 180 vision. As a result, bright light to the extreme left or right can really damage the eye and can be annoying and distracting as well. For people who are outdoors in an active capacity, or those who spend time on water, or driving (where reflected bright light is common) might want to consider broader temple bars.

Thin temple bars, commonly found on Serengeti and Ray Ban style sunglasses, block less stray light, but they are light weight and perfect for hot weather or casual situations where you don’t expect peripheral motion, snow or water. These sunglasses are perfect for situations where you want comfort, class and style, and to protect the primary aspects of your eye. People who don’t participate in sporting events, or who live primarily in the countryside where there are fewer light issues (think reflections off sky scrapers, car windscreens, etc) that cause the necessity for large temple bars. Ray Bans originally came to mass popularity as part of the counter fashion movement, those cowboys, skaters and grunge folk who defy city fashion and in doing so make their own look unique and special.

Depending on your lifestyle, your activities and the look you want to exude, you can now answer the age old question of whether you need large or small temple bars, what temple bars are for, and how to use fashion for function.

Eskimos wear sunglasses because if they didn’t, they’d literally go blind. The sun is so strong in the north, and reflected off the snow and ice it becomes a nearly inescapable force. Before modern snow goggles like the ones by Oakley and Nike the Eskimos used to rip bark off trees and cut slits in them for makeshift sunglasses. They also used the leather from the animals they were hunting and eating to form wrap and tie-on sunglasses. Essentially they blocked glare and reflections, but the eyes still had to look at the bright light on the snow and ice until the creation of tinted glass. And from there, the creation of glass that could block UV rays entirely.

Now, our eyes can be so protected and so safe that its hard to imagine the long line of inventors and survivalists who have come before us, paving the way for longer-lasting and healthier eyes. With all the advantages of modern sunglasses, you’d think more people would be wearing them when outdoors. Even running from your office to the car you can damage your eyes with light reflecting off windshields, glass sky scrapers and other reflective surfaces. Why not protect yourself? Why don’t people take the simple and affordable precautions their ancestors didn’t have the luxury of having or even being aware of?

With Eskimos in sunglasses, you can be reminded of the long history these protective shields have undergone, from necessity to fashion and then back to necessity, these amazing devices can save your sight and improve your quality of life.

When an allergy attack hits, the eyes are often hit the hardest. If you wear contact lenses like those by Focus or ClearVue, you know how important it is to avoid contact with allergens before your eyes become red and scratchy and your lenses start to feel irritating.

In spring, one of the best things to do if you suffer from allergies caused by outdoor pollen, or other unavoidable particulates, is to keep yourself constantly on an antihistamine. This is especially important if you are someone who wears contact lenses. In spring, you often see more people wearing glasses rather than contacts for just this reason, but there are highly moisture-rich contact lenses you can buy if you are too stubborn to revert to glasses.
You can also carry eye drops with you to put in your eyes whenever they feel itchy or red. This can temporarily relive eye strain but it isn’t a long-term solution. Still, in spring it isn’t a bad idea to carry this small item with you anyway.

If your allergies stem from felines or canines you may be able to simply avoid contact with pets. If, however, you are an animal lover you’ll have to keep yourself on drugs until modern medicine comes up with a better solution. There are shots you can get to help decrease your vulnerability to dander, but these are often administered weekly and can be bothersome.

If your eyes do get red and puffy right before a big event, consider tinted glasses or sunglasses to hide the worst of the redness. Nothing is more unattractive then red eyes, and there is no makeup you can buy to tint your eyes white again. You have to let mother nature run her course.
