Funny Sunglasses Photos
Filed Under Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
There are so many hilarious photos of people in sunglasses that its hard to think of where to start. First, Elton John’s crazy Oliver Peoples-style sunglasses on stage are a funny look for a square faced singer, and they do little to flatter his form or hues.
Kanye West, although a fashionable and sexy individual, often strays from the hot and into the weird with his sunglasses choices. Remember the shutter shade fad? Yeah, we wish we could forget it, too!
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, whom we always talk about in pairs since we can’t tell them apart, keep wearing oversized, bug-eyed, Jackie-O sunglasses that make them look like underage anime characters. I think this is what they are going for because they also have a coquettish look on their faces.
It wouldn’t be a list of oddballs if Lady Gaga were not mentioned. She keeps wearing big, square and boxy frames that make her look even more alien than normal. Her long, angular face demands smaller glasses (think Celion Dion) and not the larger round or square ones.
This brings me to any male actor who isn’t in perfect shape with chiseled abs and a hot body. If you are not sexy, don’t wear Police sunglasses. The look is meant to be hot and young, with a slight touch of dignity that only the likes of Antonio Bandaras could add to any campaign. If you have a beer belly and mustard stains on all your shirts then opt for Carrera, and leave the Police shades alone!

Remember the scene with Stanley Ipkiss (The Mask) where he meets the diva and all he can talk about is his power tie. Don’t be that guy. If your tie defines you then you have a long way to go to make a passable, girl-friendly personality. Instead of the tie, lets spice up the suit with better, more adult accessories like Serengeti driving sunglasses, which are dignified, bold and casual without being corporate. This is a hard look to pull off. Most people look like they are trying out for the M.I.B if they wear a suit and glasses. You don’t want to be that guy either so stick to casual or sporty sunglasses and you’ll be displaying to the world that you are more then a business man, you are an adventurer along the lines of James Bond or Steve McQueen. That’s what women want to see, and other men will respect a look of steel based on these action adventure giants.
Another mistake people make with suits is with their belt and shoes. They remember their mother saying that they need to match. This simply isn’t true, sorry Mom, but 1960s fashion tips don’t apply to the 21st century. Instead of matching you want each piece in your wardrobe to say something about who you are, or have a story. A belt from a safari you did to Africa would be far cooler then a matching, generic black belt. Shoes that are a bit flamboyant are okay—they say you have the kahunas to try new things. Maybe don’t go over the top with flashy shoes, but women respect a man who tries new things and most men’s shoe collections are abysmal.

Boy’s Summer Fashion
Filed Under Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
Justin Biber is a young guy, and he looks even more young in these sunglasses by SUPER. We would have much preferred to see him in adult sunglasses, possibly even Police or Serengeti sunglasses, which are what adult celebrities are rocking these days when not in Ray Bans. Unfortunately, Justin comes across looking like he is about 8 years old in this picture, and meanwhile his hit songs, like the totally inappropriate “baby oh” make him seem like a little boy with a dirty old man’s mind.
Meanwhile, there are other young guys who managed to walk the thin red line between youth and totally looking like a kid. Remember the young look that Tom Cruise had when he first hit the scene? What about Leonardo DiCaprio, whose youthful look in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape wasn’t diminished once he walked off set and into the real world. He emerged as a man at the première, and was ever after respected as a real actor. Smart move Leonardo, well played. Justin, you get a pathetic F next to this media genius. You have to manipulate the press, and dressing up with a kid’s hairstyle and children’s looking Mr. Potato Head sunglasses was the wrong move all around.
Real men wear brands that are not as clunky and bold as these (and also not flaming white, which is usually for women and children). So, slip into Ray Bans, Serengeti or Police for real manly attire that won’t leave you looking like a tot at daycare.

Finding the right look
Filed Under Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
Nobody can say clearly what their fashion or style is without having to think about it. There are simply not enough words to describe a complete image. We can say someone is vintage, (Johnny Depp for example) but is that really all they are in the true sense of fashion. Johnny wears modern Oliver Peoples shades, so is that really vintage, or can modern looks be blended to form one complete look?
Finding your look is a lifelong goal. Some people who have the time to dedicate non-stop (think: Paris Hilton) have discovered that they can locate their exact look. Paris has a definitive princess wardrobe of pink, frills, lace and basically nothing practical or clean-lined or simple. Meanwhile, if you walk on to any dorm room floor in the Midwest you’ll find women in sweatpants and ponytails who are her exact antithesis. Perhaps these people define themselves by what they are not, that is to say, Paris Hilton is not a dorm room co-ed. And the girl in sweatpants would never be caught dead in Paris’ pink frills.
Finding the right look if you are not a celebrity and don’t have a team of people helping you define yourself can be troublesome. Yes, there are online resources for fashion lovers, but there isn’t really a place to start where you can upload an image of yourself and people say ‘you should do this, or that.’ And there are limited guides on how to find sunglasses for your look. True, you can always find a celebrity that looks like you and try to copy them, but then all the similar looking people would have similar fashion and of course then fashion would become useless. Perhaps this is where we are headed.

How Modern Men Look Sexy
Filed Under Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
We can all agree that James Franco is a sexy beast. But most sexy men can’t pull off creative eyewear and still look manly. Franco manages to do just that wearing Dolce & Gabbana 4133 style shades. This isn’t a style most men can effectively wear. For example, imagine The Rock or even Bruce Willis wearing these feminine, tiny shades and you’ll be rolling on the floor in laughter. They only work on a dignified, educated-looking man. And while Willis and Mr. The Rock might be educated, that isn’t the look they strive for on stage.
Franco has a tendency to push his chin into his neck, a look that is superior if not snobbish. And that kind of action is what makes it possible for him to pull of these Dolce & Gabbana shades. They look like something a blonde woman could wear on the beach, but on him they look somehow perfectly fit.
Modern men, unlike any time prior in history, are now able to play around with fashion in new ways. They can wear sunglasses as a creative accessory and really play with their look and character feel. Since men don’t yet feel comfortable accessorizing with necklaces, earrings and make-up the sunglasses are all they have to give their face an edgy look. Notice how many tough men use sunglasses to define their personalities—Elton John, Kanye West, Robert Downey Jr., the list goes on and on. All of these men use sunglasses to define themselves in a new, rich and almost feminine manner. Think about Antonio Bandarez, who wears Police sunglasses to add a tough, edgy feel to his already masculine look.

Nicole Richie is constantly putting herself back in the limelight with her odd, hippie fashion looks. But while many think these looks are over the top, we kind of like them and we hope Richie keeps up the new trend setting, even if no one else follows. These large sunglasses look like Dior, but everyone makes their own Jackie O sunglasses these days its hard to tell.
The odd headband is a bit weird, and reminds one of the hippie years when free love reigned supreme… well, at least until we discovered free love had the unfortunate side effect of STDs and eventual dementia.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of accessorizing, and while Richie seems to go too far at times she is starting to see that her new, skinny self is beautiful and that she is capable of setting her own looks. She can’t look like Paris Hilton or people will recall how close the duo once was. So, Richie can’t go elite fashion. She can’t go too vintage or grunge, because that’s one way to end up Wynona Ryder-ed on the sidelines. But this hippie middle ground seems to work for her.
Richie has a great personality. As a beautiful slightly overweight girl she had to develop a personality and sense of humor and that has carried over now that she has shed the extra pounds and has started to assert herself in a fashionable way and as a personality on her own, separate from Paris in every way.

Fall Fringe Fashion
Filed Under Brand Wave, Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses, Eyewear Knowledge | View Comments
Staying fashionable and chic doesn’t always mean following any little trend you see pop up on the fringe. Sometimes the tried and true, and relatively mainstream designs, like Prada’s beautiful fall release, are popular for a reason. But just the same, fringe fashion can be fun, sexy, vibrant and unique. This year’s fringe fashion has been alive and well, probably new life was breathed into the art of fringe fashion by Lady Gaga, who recently worse a dress made of raw meat! Now that is a good mix of fashion and politics, and definitely exists on the fringe of the fashion world.
This fall, fringe fashion is expected to take a bit of an animalistic turn. keep an eye out of animal prints, especially in accessories like purses, shoes and sunglasses. To get in on the look early, start purchasing vintage designs that incorporate animal print with 1960s style clean lines and textured fabrics. Fringe fashion is all about pushing fashion the the edge and yet staying close to what the public needs to see and wants to have. You might not see this animal print trend turn mainstream, but in the fringe fashion world, expect to see a few key pieces vibrantly and politically decked out with animal prints.
Hats are also coming back into fringe fashion, and here size does matter. We’re expecting larger-than-life hats with flamboyant arches and curves, and possibly an insurgency of feathers and boas. We expect to see hats return to the mainstream in a less obvious way, but in the meantime fringe fashion will keep the rest of the world entertained with their dedication to the obvious.

Angelina Jolie, Accidental Fashion Goddess
Filed Under Brand Wave, Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
She wasn’t always mainstream, or even an A-lister. Before she was the famous actress we know and love today, Angelina Jolie was a model. Her early shots reveal a bit about the person she would become, with stark features and eyes daring you to cross her the wrong way. But, despite her start in fashion Angelina rarely adheres to the prescribed feminine fashion norms. When men were suddenly wearing Ray Ban Aviators, she took up the style despite her gender. When women started wearing Prada, she went the other way and began wearing sharp-lined Carrera sunglasses that enhanced her masculine qualities and drew a line between her and most other women in Hollywood.
Despite what seems to be an obvious attempt to walk the line in the opposite direction of her female peers, Angelina’s fashion choices have panned out. She is hailed as a somewhat accidental fashion goddess, with some innovative and creative wardrobe pairings. For example, while colors were in style last year, Angelina showed up to major events in black, her tattoos and limited jewelry leading the way.
Now, as a mother of several children, her casual clothing has taken on a more practical look. Her handbags are now part diaper bag, and her heels are now low enough to chase after run-away children at the park. She keeps a busy, hectic schedule juggling her work, her family and her hot-shot boyfriend. She manages to look good in simple, old-fashioned clothes like denim and white T-shirts, with an emphasis on traditional sunglasses to give her a retro and yet modern look. She has a thing for the tom-boy fashion era of the 1980’s without actually dabbling in acid-wash jeans, and she is really a fashion goddess to be idolized

Strange Shapes, Beautiful Faces
Filed Under Brand Wave, Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
Beautiful women can be more experimental with fashion. You’ve heard the saying, “she’d look good in a potato sack” which means a woman is so beautiful that she literally can’t look bad. This is simply not true, and Tori Spelling has helped to prove that point with her recent fashion blunder. Tori donned a pair of Tom Ford TF 0118, normally an interesting pair of sunglasses that require an interesting and strong wardrobe to accompany it. Instead she foolishly paired these edgy sunglasses with her normal attire and traditional hair do. Tsk Tsk, Tori.
Strange shapes on sunglasses need to be accompanies by bold fashion choices like wild bed-head hair or a strong and attention-grabbing hat. Tori, who normally looks elegant and well put together, should not have attempted to wear these Tom Ford sunglasses, her reputation and features simply don’t support the style and she manages to prove that a beautiful woman doesn’t look good in simply anything.
This mistake is quite common, and non-celebrities make it all the time. You’ll see a fashionable look in a magazine or on one of your favorite stars and think that you could also pull off the same look. Simply not true! Fashion is the art of making a person more interesting or beautiful through clothing, make-up and hair. When you create a look on one person that compliments their features and form it almost never translates to someone with opposing features. Therefore, if you want to copy celebrity fashion you need to find a celebrity that has similar skin and hair tones as well as a similarly shaped face. Tori Spelling has a long, thin face and large round sunglasses just act to enhance the length of her face, which isn’t particularly appealing.

Five More Reasons to Love Ray Ban Wayfarers
Filed Under Brand Wave, Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses, Eyewear Knowledge | View Comments
As if their amazing designs, optical technology and comfort fit were not enough, Ray Bans have given us hundreds of reasons over the years to love their cornerstone product—the Wayfarer. Here are just a few more to keep you deeply in love with the granddaddy of all sunglasses fashion:
1) A cinematic powerhouse. What do Risky Business, Blues Brothers, Top Gun and Crossroads have in common?—they all feature Ray Ban Wayfarers on their main characters. These shades have been a powerhouse in cinema for decades, a trend that only very recently other eyewear companies have delved into.
2) Design Genius. Simplicity is key in most successful, multi-generational fashions, and the Wayfarer achieves that by focusing on long-term comfort, classic lines and colors that match your wardrobe.
3) Versatility. Many designers cannot imagine a single product as it fits into its surrounding collection or overall design concept. Ray Ban is not like that. The Wayfarer, Clubmaster and Aviator all compliment each other, making it possible for you to have an entire wardrobe of eyewear fashions by one brand.
4) Bridging the Gap. You’ll sometimes see a grandparent at the park huffing about the degrading nature of the next generation. Meanwhile, a skater at the same park is mocking grandma. Ironically they are both wearing Wayfarer sunglasses, Nike shoes, Levi jeans and Old Navy shirts—there simply isn’t that big a difference when it comes down to it!
5) Reinvention. Ray Ban released a series of new colors on the Wayfarer, including a color-it-yourself set, checkered sets, and a new line of pastel colors. This makes the Wayfarer more accessible to a new generation obsessed with obvious style.
