Earlier this year fashion experts signed a deep, long, sad breath and waved goodbye to real fashion in favor of the outter-space black pleather and faux silver of brands like Gucci that had recently come into fashion in the music industry. Now, with the conclusion of the 2010 Academy Awards, Hollywood has proven it has more class and fashion sense than the whole of the music industry combined.

This year the Oscars were delivered by Steve Martin, who has long been a comedy guru, and Alec Baldwin, whose role on 30 Rock has launched him into the comedy sphere, rocked the Oscars with great humor and old-fashioned Rat-Pack clothing and grace. Steve Martin showed up in designer eyewear by Persol, the PO 2876V model, which is a design he has long employed but only recently made work for him.

The men were all dressed in tuxedos and the women all had elegant, floor-length dresses on. Makeup and hair were perfect and high heels were higher than normal but appropriately classy. This is a turning point in the fashion industry. A-list celebrities are no longer interested in pushing the envelope and getting attention with their flashy clothes and wild, unkempt rebellious hair. Real stars stay Lauren Bacall classy, emulate the Rat Pak (something George Clooney has always done) and don’t wear anything that will embarrass themselves or the industry. This is in stark contrast to the music industry. At the Grammy awards earlier this year we witnessed musicians embarrassing themselves dressed as masochistic aliens (and lets not even get into what Lady Gaga’s psychological issues may be). This all proves once and for all the Hollywood is glamour and gold, and most music stars are a flash in the pan.

It seemed half the world was holding its breath as Virtue and Moir skated their ice dance in the 2010 Winter Olympics. This dynamic, fashionable duo creates quite a stir back home with their relaxed, Ray Ban look bringing ‘cool’ back to this winter sport.

Having performed well in the compulsory and original dances, their free skate came off effortlessly and gracefully, and surpassed their competition’s skill by literal leaps and bounds. The first gold won on home ice for Canada, the moment was as emotional as it was beautiful. The camera could not stay off Virtue, as she gleamed while watching her competitors finish their dances a bit behind in skill and poise. Moir looked happy but a bit detached as reporters dashed to interview the duo over their superb performance.

But it was not all smiles and fun. Russian competitors in the ice dance found a bit of a loop hole in the rules and exploited it to their advantage, as any good athlete would. They wore ropes around their mid sections, which they then used to fling each other around the ice in creative and bold new patterns. This secured them third place, but brought controversy to the rink due to the aboriginal themed costumes, which led to some saying it was an unauthentic portrayal of natives, and demeaned the sport. Minor alterations were made to the costumes, but the underlining theme remained. Their skill is not contested, but we do expect to see several new rules in the 2014 games about costumes due to this year’s events.
