Fads come and go, trends last a bit longer, but one’s personal style is a collaboration of the old and the new, of the fads from yesteryear coupled with the trends of the present. One of the biggest fashion fads of 2009 will be the coupling of the old and the new, as evidenced by the design houses’ sneak peaks at their Spring/Summer 09 collections. To get a jump on the fashion that’s lastin’ check out a lesser known brand of eyewear called Web, and the elegant style of Burberry.
Web combines the elegance and class of the 1930’s with the technology of today. The 1930’s a time of innovation and, more importantly, aviation, has become known as an era of elegance and luxury. The sunglasses inspired by that generation have all of the characteristics of the period with all of the ergodynamics of today.
Since the 1850s Burberry has been designing for comfort, the outdoors and for classy and elegant style. Burberry eyewear is clean lined and simple, but not unnoticeable. For the 1960s look with larger, Jackie-O shaped frames and darker or gradient lenses, check out Burberry’s unique 2008 and forthcoming 2009 collections.
The 1970s and 1980s brought a backlash against the overly large and bulky shades of previous years. As one fad waxes, another wanes. Following the larger shades came smaller, thinner and more rectangular shades in dark and fixed colors. Check out Revo sunglasses to get the look of the 80s and 90s. An emerging design house focused on simplicity, continuity and minimalism, Revo shades are the perfect counterweight to the Burberry fad.
Whatever your era of choice, you’ll find shades that hallmark the period.

The recently re-released Ray-Ban Clubmasters have more than surpassed consumer expectations. Ray-Ban expects over 15 million copies of the frames to be sold by 2010; an ambitious but not unattainable corporate goal.
Modeled after 1950’s retro music fads and inspired by Malcolm X’s very own sense of identity and style, the Clubmaster re-release comes in seven solid shades and one two-tone collaboration. The thick brow-line design gives a classic, yet bold look while the lenses, encased in the trademark Ray-Ban gold, adds a touch of class and timelessness. Meanwhile, the silver pins on the temple bars and brow-bars add an iconic touch. With choice, style and the ever-popular retro-throwback, the Clubmaster has already become a new must-have item for celebs and business elites.
The Clubmaster design was original released in 1986, mocking the then revolutionary brow-line design inspired by 1950’s newscasters. Always hip and classic, Ray-Ban picked up on an emerging fad and propelled it into popularity with the first Clubmaster line. The style was famous in the 80’s with musicians, activists, rock-n-rollers and anyone with a message of freshness. The re-released version of the Clubmaster reaches even further into the past with colors and lines popular in the 50s and 60s.
In honor of Clubmaster’s esteemed past as a icon of rebellion and innovation, Ray-Ban commissioned several up-and-coming artists to remake one iconic song from the 50’s. The dual-sided track has the remakes on side A and the originals on side B, a true commemoration of the past and future of music, innovation and rebellion. Released with the Clubmaster re-launch, the most innovative and revolutionary songs of the 50s is sure to be as timeless as the Clubmaster.
